Arusha is the base for the northern safari circuit. Almost every Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara itinerary starts and ends here, and most visitors spend at least one night in the city before heading out.

The population is somewhere over half a million and growing fast, which makes Arusha the largest settlement anywhere on the northern circuit and the place most itineraries begin and end.
It is an administrative centre well beyond tourism. The East African Community is headquartered here, and the city hosted the international tribunal for Rwanda for close to two decades, giving it a diplomatic and NGO presence unusual for its size.
Transfers run from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) directly to a hotel in Arusha.
JRO handles international arrivals and sits roughly an hour east of the city; ARK is a small airfield used mainly for domestic hops to the park airstrips. Overland shuttles from Nairobi also terminate here.
By road it connects to Moshi and the Kenyan border in a couple of hours, to Nairobi in five or six by shuttle bus, and to Dar es Salaam in a long day. It is the junction of the northern circuit rather than an endpoint.
The Cultural Heritage Centre on the western edge of town is the largest craft and art complex in the region, and the central Maasai market is the more informal alternative.
Mount Meru dominates the skyline directly north of the city, and the surrounding slopes are coffee country — plantation and roastery tours run as half-day trips.
The Arusha Declaration Museum covers the 1967 policy that shaped post-independence Tanzania, and the central Clock Tower is the usual meeting point and landmark.
Tanzanite is mined at Mererani a short drive south-east, and Arusha is where most of it is cut, graded and sold. Several dealers run workshop visits.
Arusha functions as a staging point rather than a destination in itself: briefings, kit checks before a Kilimanjaro climb, and the first and last nights of most safaris happen here.
It is also the launch point for day trips to Arusha National Park, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Materuni waterfalls when there is a spare day at either end of a trip.
Arusha sits at around 1,400 metres and stays temperate all year, with cool evenings even in the hot months. There is no bad season to pass through.
The long rains fall from March to May and the short rains in November, but neither disrupts a night at either end of a safari — this is a stopover rather than an activity destination.
Accommodation is tightest in July and August and over the December holidays, when the whole circuit is at capacity. Booking the first and last nights early matters more than choosing a season.
